Ramram (Heliotropium bacciferum): Plant Description and Uses
Common Name: Ramram
Spelling: Ra'a open, then Mim doubled, Fa'a open, then Mim
Scientific Name: Heliotropium bacciferum
Description:
Ramram is a seasonal herbaceous plant that grows to about 40 cm in height. It features lance-shaped, green leaves and small white flowers. This plant is known to be consumed by livestock and has been noted for its traditional medicinal uses.
It is reputed to be beneficial for treating stings from scorpions and snakes. According to some traditional beliefs, when a monitor lizard (known locally as "Warar") is bitten by a snake, it runs to this plant and rolls on it (or "wriggles") to neutralize the effect of the venom, although the accuracy of this belief is uncertain. Ramram typically grows in firm and compact soils.
